All 55 universities
Names, ownership and regions come from the Ministry of Education register and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission list. A region marked not stated means neither source names one, and none is assumed.
“Accredited by” names the regulator lists that carry the institution as accredited: GTEC is the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and NMC the Nursing and Midwifery Council, read from their own lists on 7 October 2026. “None matched” means the name does not appear on a regulator list. It does not mean the institution is unaccredited.
Institutions the Commission does not recognise
As at 30 September 2026 the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission names 109 institutions as unrecognised and 18 as unaccredited. These are not on the register as schools. Names are exactly as the Commission prints them.

How to read a "best universities in Ghana" list
Every year, someone posts a list of the best universities in Ghana, and the order changes from site to site. That happens because there is no single agreed measure. Some lists count how many people visit a university's website. Some count research papers. Some ask employers. A few simply copy last year's list.
We built this page from two published international rankings, with the working shown, and we say what each one measures. It is a list of leading universities, not a measure of the education you will get on a given course.
How this list was built
We took the Ghanaian universities that appear in two published tables and gave them points by position.
| QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026 (released 12 February 2026) | Seven Ghanaian universities, in the order the press reported them | 7 points for first in Ghana down to 1 point for seventh |
| Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 (released 30 September 2026) | Five Ghanaian universities, with global bands | 5 points for the top band down to 1 point for the fifth |
Source: SchoolRegistry Ghana research desk. Last checked 12 October 2026.
Where two universities share a band in the THE table, they get the same points. Ties on points are put in order of founding year, oldest first. Founding years are given only where we are sure of them.
Two cautions. First, the University of Ghana says THE told it that its true rank rose by 114 places, ahead of UCC. THE's public table shows UCC first, with UG and UCC in the same 801 to 1000 band. We have given both the same points and do not take a side. Second, we have the QS Ghana order from press reports, with an explicit regional rank only for Kumasi Technical University (48th in the region).
The list: leading universities in Ghana, 2026
| 1 | University of Ghana | Public | Legon, Accra | 1948 | 1 of 7 | 801 to 1000 | 12 |
| 2 | University of Cape Coast (UCC) | Public | Cape Coast | 1962 | 3 of 7 | 801 to 1000 | 10 |
| 3 | Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) | Public | Kumasi | 1952 | 2 of 7 | 1201 to 1400 | 9 |
| 4 | Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) | Public | Kumasi | Not confirmed | 4 of 7 | Not ranked | 4 |
| 5 | Ashesi University | Private | Berekuso | 2002 | 5 of 7 | Not ranked | 3 |
| 6 | University for Development Studies (UDS) | Public | Tamale | 1992 | Not ranked | 1601 to 1800 | 2 |
| 7 | Catholic University of Ghana (Fiapre) | Private | Sunyani | Not confirmed | 6 of 7 | Not ranked | 2 |
| 8 | University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) | Public | Sunyani | 2012 | Not ranked | 1801 to 2000 | 1 |

What QS and Times Higher Education measure
The QS Sub-Saharan Africa 2026 ranking was released on 12 February 2026 and ranked 69 universities in 21 countries; seven are Ghanaian. Times Higher Education released its World University Rankings 2027 on 30 September 2026, and five Ghanaian universities were ranked out of 2,297 institutions assessed.
These tables rest mostly on research, reputation and international outlook. They do not measure teaching in the classroom, support for students or how well a course prepares you for work. They also cover few Ghanaian universities, so an unranked university is not a poor one. Use a ranking to start a shortlist, then speak to past students and look hard at the programme you want.
What each university is known for
University of Ghana. The oldest university in Ghana. Publishes its own cut-off points.
University of Cape Coast (UCC). Education, humanities, sciences and health. Shown first in Ghana on the Times Higher Education public table.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Science, engineering, built environment and health. Publishes cut-off aggregates for its programmes.
Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). A technical university. 48th in the QS Sub-Saharan Africa table, with a score of 17.1.
Ashesi University. A private liberal arts university in the Eastern Region.
University for Development Studies (UDS). Northern Ghana's public university, with campuses in several northern towns.
Other public universities worth a look
These are public universities that do not appear in either table, so they carry no points. That says nothing against them: international tables favour research output and English-language web presence, and they cover only a few Ghanaian universities.
| University of Education, Winneba (UEW) | Public | Teacher education and related fields. |
| University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) | Public | Accounting, marketing, law and professional programmes. |
| Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) | Public | Management, public administration and law. |
| University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) | Public | Health sciences, in Ho. |
| S.D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) | Public | Business and development studies, in Wa. |
| Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) | Public | Technical and vocational teacher training, in Kumasi. |
| C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) | Public | Technology and applied sciences, in Navrongo. |
| Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) | Public | Communication technology, in Accra. |
| Regional Maritime University | Public | Maritime and port-related programmes, in Accra. |

Best universities by subject
A single list hides the fact that a university can be strong in one field and ordinary in another. For law, we have a separate page: best universities to study law in Ghana, with the nineteen faculties named by the General Legal Council. For nursing, see nursing programmes at universities and our list of nursing training colleges.
Technical universities and the other routes
Technical universities, including those in Accra, Bolgatanga, Cape Coast, Ho, Koforidua, Kumasi, Sunyani, Takoradi and Tamale, run HND and degree programmes in applied fields, with a practical focus. Colleges of education train teachers and nursing colleges train nurses and midwives. We have a page for each: technical universities, colleges of education and nursing training colleges.
Before you apply anywhere, check the cut-off points for the programme, confirm accreditation, and read the admission calendar so you do not miss the deadline. Pick the institution that fits the course and the work you want, not the one someone calls the best.
Public or private
Public universities charge fees set with the Ministry, and admission is competitive. Private universities set their own fees and often admit throughout the year. Check accreditation before you pay for anything: the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission publishes the list of accredited institutions, and our universities page shows the status for each. For private options, see best private universities in Ghana.
How to choose
- Start from the course. Check that the programme is accredited and that the university offers it on the campus you can attend.
- Read the cut-off points. UG, KNUST and UCC publish theirs. Compare them with your grades using the WASSCE grade calculator.
- Check accreditation. Use the regulator's list, not an advert.
- Count the full cost. Fees are set by each university. We never estimate a fee. Ask for the schedule in writing.
- Look at the admission calendar. See the university admissions calendar for the dates the universities have published.
What we could not confirm
- A national, official ranking of Ghanaian universities. None exists that we could find.
- The exact global positions of UG, KNUST and UCC in the QS World University Rankings. We did not find published figures we could check.
- Founding years for some universities, which we leave empty.

Questions people ask
- Which university is the cheapest in Ghana?
- Fees are set by each university, and there is no national fee list. Each university publishes its own schedule of fees on its own site, and the University of Ghana's is linked in the sources below.
- What are the top 5 universities?
- There is no official top five. A ranking needs a published method, and we add one only where the data supports it. What we do show is all 55 universities on the register, with ownership, region and the accreditation status the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission publishes.
- Which universities in Ghana are unaccredited?
- The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission publishes two lists. As at 30 September 2026 it names 109 institutions as unrecognised, and it separately lists 18 as unaccredited. Both lists are printed in full under the table on this page, with the names exactly as the Commission writes them. Institutions on either list are not shown on the register as schools.
- Is E8 a pass in WASSCE?
- E8 is below the credit level that universities ask for, which is A1 to C6 in the required subjects. Whether E8 counts as a pass on your certificate is a matter for WAEC's published scheme, and WAEC has not published a table of that. Our WASSCE grade calculator adds up your grades the way admission pages describe.
- Which is the best foreign university?
- There is no official ranking of foreign universities. Before you pay a foreign institution, check the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission's list of institutions it does not recognise, which is printed below.
- What are the fees for the University of Ghana?
- Universities publish fees on their own sites. The University of Ghana publishes its schedule of fees on its own website, linked in the sources below.
- What is the deadline for University of Ghana Forms 2026?
- The University of Ghana's deadlines page gives 8 September 2026 for Ghanaian undergraduate applicants other than selected College of Health Sciences programmes, 24 July 2026 for those health programmes, and 21 August 2026 for diploma to degree applicants and Ghanaian applicants with a foreign background. All of those dates have passed.
- What are the top 5 universities in Ghana?
- On the two published tables we used, the University of Ghana, KNUST, the University of Cape Coast, Kumasi Technical University and Ashesi University lead the QS Sub-Saharan Africa list. The THE 2027 table has UCC, UG, KNUST, UDS and UENR.
- What are the top 20 universities in Ghana in 2026?
- Only nine Ghanaian universities appear in the two tables we used. They are in the table above. The other public universities are listed beside them without points.
- Is KNUST better than UCC?
- It depends on the measure and the course. The QS Sub-Saharan Africa table put KNUST second in Ghana and UCC third. The THE 2027 table put UCC first and KNUST third. Choose by programme, not by a single table.
- Which is the number one university in Ghana?
- The University of Ghana leads the QS table, and the University of Cape Coast leads THE's public table, with UG disputing the order. We list both.
- Which university in Ghana is best for science and engineering?
- KNUST and the University of Mines and Technology are the two in the tables with a science and engineering focus. Check each programme's accreditation.
- Which university has the nicest campus?
- We hold no data on that. Visit before you decide.
- Are rankings the same as accreditation?
- No. Accreditation, from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, is a permission to run a programme. A ranking is a comparison. A university can be accredited and unranked.
- Is this page updated?
- We re-check it when QS or THE publish a new table, and note the date at the top.
