Private universities in Ghana: accredited list
31 of the 55 universities on the register are stated as private, and 19 of those appear on the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission's list of accredited institutions. Another 76 private tertiary colleges offer HND and degree programmes and have their own page. Fees and student numbers are not published nationally, so there is no official best or cheapest.

The 31 private universities
Listed alphabetically. The status column is what the regulator publishes, read on 7 October 2026.
The accredited-by column names the regulator lists that carry the institution: GTEC is the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and NMC the Nursing and Midwifery Council. None matched means the name does not appear on a regulator list, which is not a finding that the institution is unaccredited. Ownership is as stated on the Ministry of Education register. Universities with no owner stated are on the main universities page.
How private universities differ from public ones
Private universities set their own fees, and many admit through the year, each with its own intakes. You may not have to wait for one national window. Public universities such as UG, KNUST and UCC publish cut-off points and admission is competitive.
Some private colleges award degrees through a mentoring public university. The college teaches you and the public university awards the degree, so ask who awards it, and get that in writing. The name on your certificate is the one an employer or another university will read.
Fees are not published nationally, so every figure you hear is the university's own. Two private universities, Ashesi University and the Catholic University of Ghana, appear in the QS Sub-Saharan Africa 2026 table. International tables favour research output, and most private universities focus on teaching, so they rarely appear. A missing ranking says nothing about quality.
Choosing a private university in Ghana
Private universities in Ghana range from established institutions that award their own degrees to small colleges that depend on a mentoring public university. Fees, class sizes and campus life vary widely. The rankings that exist favour research output, and most private universities are teaching-focused, so they rarely feature.
Our page therefore does what is possible: it shows the evidence that exists, in separate tables, and does not blend it into one score.

A university in several tables has more public evidence behind it. A university in none is not worse, because the register matches names and many private colleges are known by a name that differs from the regulator's.

Red flags before you pay a private university
- The university or the programme is not on the Commission's accredited list. Treat that as a serious warning.
- Pressure to pay quickly. A genuine school gives you time to read the details.
- No written fee schedule that says what you pay, when, and what it covers.
- A vague answer on who awards the degree.
- No clear statement of recognition by the professional body if you plan to study nursing or law.
- Fees requested into a personal account. Pay the institution's official account and keep the receipt.

Towns are as the register states them. Accra and its suburbs hold most; a few sit in Kumasi, Sunyani and the Eastern Region.
How to choose
- Accreditation first. Confirm the institution and the programme on the regulator list. Our tables are a guide, not a substitute for asking.
- Visit the campus. Check classrooms, library and the programme you want.
- Check recognition for your goal. If you plan to practise nursing, law or another regulated profession, confirm that the programme is recognised by the professional body.
What we could not confirm
- Which private university is cheapest, biggest or "best". No fee, enrolment or results data is published nationally.
- A match to the GTEC list for every private university. Our register matches on names, and a name difference can hide a match.
- Founding years for some universities, left empty.
