WASSCE grades and aggregate: what A1 to F9 mean and how to calculate
The WASSCE has nine grades, A1 to F9. For university admission the grades A1 to C6 count as credits, and the University of Ghana and KNUST add six subjects into an aggregate that must not exceed 24, with lower being better. WAEC Ghana publishes no mark ranges, so none are printed. The calculator below adds your six grades and can set the total beside a published cut-off.

Calculate your WASSCE total
The calculator runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. The University of Ghana counts English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and three electives for science programmes, and English, Core Mathematics, Social Studies and three electives for the rest. The electives it counts depend on the programme, so check the programme’s own requirements.
The nine grades

Credit is A1 to C6 as the University of Ghana and KNUST state it. KNUST prints values only for A1 to C6, in the table that opens the cut-off section of its guide. Meaning and mark ranges beyond that are for WAEC to publish.

Questions people ask
- What are the WAEC grades?
- The WASSCE uses nine grades: A1, B2, B3, C4, C5, C6, D7, E8, F9. A1 is the highest and F9 the lowest. The number in the grade is its place on the scale.
- What is a pass grade in WASSCE?
- Universities ask for a credit, which the University of Ghana and KNUST both define as A1 to C6, in the required subjects. WAEC's own definition of a pass is not published, so none is printed here.
- Is E8 a pass in WASSCE?
- E8 is below the credit level, A1 to C6, that UG and KNUST ask for. Whether E8 counts as a pass on the certificate itself is for WAEC to say, and WAEC has not published a table of it.
- What score is A1 in WASSCE 2026?
- A1 is the top grade. WAEC Ghana does not publish a mark range for each grade. Ranges quoted on other websites are unofficial.
- What grade is 60 in WASSCE?
- WAEC publishes no table of mark ranges, so a mark cannot be converted to a grade. Your result slip shows your grade, and that is the thing universities use.
- How do WAEC calculate scores?
- WAEC Ghana does not publish the WASSCE conversion. For the BECE it says it uses the stanine method, and it has not said the same of the WASSCE. For admission, a university adds six grades to make an aggregate, which is what the calculator above does.
- What does a C6 score mean in the WAEC grading system?
- C6 is the lowest credit grade. UG and KNUST count A1 to C6 as credits. UG also says applicants must hold at least C6 in integrated science and social studies. In KNUST's own cut-off table a C6 is valued at 4, the same as a C4.
- Is C5 a good grade in WAEC?
- It is a credit, one step above the credit line. Whether it is enough depends on the programme: add up your six grades and set the total beside the programme's cut-off in the calculator. KNUST values a C5 at 4 in its cut-off sum.
