How We Build Ranking and List Pages

The signals we use, the points we give, and the things we will not rank on.

What these pages are

SchoolRegistry Ghana publishes lists such as "Top 20 senior high schools in Ghana" because families search for them. We have a rule about how to make them: use only facts a reader could check, show the working and say what the list cannot tell you. This page sets out that rule and the exact method for each list.

The rule on exam results

The West African Examinations Council releases WASSCE and BECE results to candidates and schools, and the Ministry of Education reports national figures. We have not found an official public table that compares schools. We hold no school-level results. Where a school or an official source publishes its own results we may cite that source, and we will name it and give the date, but we do not rank on a result we do not have and we do not accept numbers sent to us without a published source.

How the senior high lists are scored

Schools in our pool earn points: 5 for an NSMQ title, 3 for runner-up, 2 for third place (recorded from 2013), and 4 for being in the Ministry's top ten most chosen schools in 2025. Ties are put in order by the older founding year and then by name. That is a way of ordering a list, not a claim that an older school is better.

The pool holds schools that appear in at least one of those signals, plus girls', boys' and mixed schools that readers ask about. A school with no points is not a weak school. It means it appears in none of the public signals above.

Founding years are as reported on each school's Wikipedia page and are left empty when unclear. We use a mission background only when a source names one.

What we do not use

  • Category A, B and C labels. We could not find an official public list of which school is in which category, and unofficial lists disagree. The category pages explain the rules and show what is official.
  • Fees. A fee appears on a school page only when the school published it, with the date.
  • Facilities, "beauty" or reputation surveys. No standard source.
  • Paid placement. None, ever.

How the university and college lists are built

University lists use position in the two international tables and are clearly labelled as such. Nursing, private university and college of education lists use the regulators' accreditation lists. Where the register fails to match a name to a regulator list, we say that a missing match is not a finding of non-accreditation.

Our sister research firm PollsAfrica keeps a reference list of Ghana's exam bodies and education regulators, a useful second place to check a regulator's role.
