How to check BECE results in Ghana (2026)

How do I check my BECE results?

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) publishes BECE results on its eResults website. You need your index number and a results checker voucher. The voucher has a serial number and a PIN.

We checked each fact below on 12 October 2026 against WAEC and government pages. News reports are labelled "reported by". Anything we could not find, we say so.

Key facts at a glance (checked 12 October 2026)

Candidate numbers come from the WAEC press release as published by the Information Services Department (ISD) on 30 July 2026.

Which website is the official BECE results portal?

The portal for school and private BECE candidates is eresults.waecgh.org. Its home page lists six exam types: BECE (School), BECE (Private), WASSCE (School), WASSCE (Private), SSCE (School) and SSCE (Private). It also has links for Help, FAQ and WITHHELD/CANCELLED.

WAEC's older results site, ghana.waecdirect.org, also lists BECE as an exam type. It asks for a date of birth when you pick BECE (School). Its voucher instructions are the clearest official wording we found, and they are repeated in the steps below.

Many sites that rank on Google for this search are vendors or blogs, not WAEC. Check the address bar before you type your index number. The official addresses end in waecgh.org or waecdirect.org.

What do I need before I check BECE results?

1. Your index number, printed on your registration slip and known to your school.
2. The exam year (2026 for this year's candidates) and whether you were a school or private candidate.
3. A results checker voucher, which gives you a serial number and a 12 digit PIN.
4. Your date of birth, in case the portal asks. The ghana.waecdirect.org page marks that field for BECE (School).
5. A phone or computer with internet. Reported by Yen.com.gh: you also tick a CAPTCHA before you submit.

How do I buy a BECE result checker voucher?

The voucher is sometimes called a scratch card, though most people now get the serial number and PIN by SMS. WAEC's results page links to a WAEC mobile money services page and a list of "Scratchcard Outlets". We could not open either on 12 October, so we cannot give you a verified list of outlets.

Reported by MyJoyOnline and Yen.com.gh in July 2026: dial 7133998# or visit buycheckercodes.com.gh to buy with mobile money, and the serial number and PIN come by SMS. Payment works with MTN Mobile Money, Telecel Cash and AT Money, and some WAEC offices and Ghana Post offices sell vouchers. Other sellers advertise other codes. We have not verified that any of them is run by WAEC, so check the seller's name before you approve a payment.

How much does the BECE results checker cost?

We could not find an official price on any WAEC page. Sellers show different prices. A Graphic advert by Tayuba Online Services lists GH¢19 per checker for one to nine, and GH¢16 each for ten or more. The buycheckercodes.com.gh site lists GH¢26 on a page we saw on 12 October. These are vendor prices, not WAEC's. Ask the price before you confirm.

What is a BECE results scratch card?

The same thing as the voucher. The serial number and PIN used to sit under a scratch layer on a card. Today most people receive them by text. Keep them private.

How do I check BECE results on my phone?

Any phone with a browser works. These steps match WAEC's voucher instructions on ghana.waecdirect.org and the reports from MyJoyOnline and Yen.com.gh.

1. Buy your voucher and wait for the SMS with the serial number and PIN.
2. Open your browser and type eresults.waecgh.org yourself. Do not tap a link from a message or social media post.
3. Choose BECE (School) or BECE (Private).
4. Enter your index number, then confirm it. Reported by MyJoyOnline: you type it twice.
5. Select 2026 as the exam year.
6. Enter the serial number, then the PIN.
7. Complete the CAPTCHA and press Submit once. WAEC's page says it "may take several minutes".
8. Save the result. Reported by Yen.com.gh: you can send the file to a print shop for a paper copy, which you may need for placement.

Can I check BECE results by SMS?

We found no WAEC service that sends your results by text. SMS plays a part only in the purchase, when your serial number and PIN arrive after you pay. The result is read on the website.

What if the portal is slow or rejects my details?

Wait a few minutes. Check the index number, year, exam type, and that the serial number and PIN were copied in full. If it still fails, use the Help link on the portal or ask your school.

When are BECE results released?

For 2026 the facts are these.

• Reported by GNA on 20 July 2026: the Minister of Education said the results might be released on or before 31 July, citing the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.
• WAEC's press release is dated Wednesday 29 July 2026. The ISD published it on 30 July. It says WAEC "has released" the provisional results of the 2026 BECE for School Candidates.
• The Final Awards Committee met on 21 July 2026 to decide the malpractice sanctions. One news site gives 21 July as the release day, which we think mixes up the two events. We use the press release date.

The results are provisional. WAEC sends them to schools through the district directors of education, and candidates can read them online.

What is the BECE results release date for 2027?

WAEC has not published one, and we will not guess. We did not collect earlier years' dates from WAEC pages, so we cannot give a pattern. Our BECE and WASSCE hub will carry the date when it is out.

What does a BECE result show?

We could not find a WAEC page that describes the layout of the result statement, and we do not want to describe a screen we have not seen. What we can say comes from official placement rules.

BECE subjects are graded from 1 to 9, where 1 is the best. For school placement, the CSSPS guideline says the aggregate is made from the four core subjects, which are English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies, plus the two best grades from your elective subjects. A lower aggregate is better. The lowest possible total is 6.

Our BECE aggregate calculator adds those grades for you. No published source sets a pass mark, so it never says what counts as good. Placement is by merit among your choices, so one aggregate can win a place in one school and miss in another.

What if my BECE result is withheld or cancelled?

Some 2026 results were held back. According to the WAEC press release, the subject results of 496 candidates were cancelled, and the entire results of 105 candidates. Subject results of 119 candidates and the entire results of 48 candidates were withheld. Separately, the subject results of 2,722 candidates from 229 schools were withheld for further scrutiny.

Here is what to do if you are one of them.

1. Go to irreg.waecgh.org. The page is WAEC's irregularity system and has a Candidate Login. You can also use the WITHHELD/CANCELLED link on the eResults home page.
2. Read the reason shown. WAEC said the page shows why a result was withheld or cancelled.
3. Ask your head teacher. WAEC said heads of school and proprietors can see their candidates' withheld results with their own logins.
4. Keep checking. WAEC said decisions on the 2,722 scrutiny cases were expected by 31 August 2026. We could not find the outcome on a WAEC page on 12 October.

The press release printed the address as irreg.waecgh.gh. We opened irreg.waecgh.org and it loads, so use that one.

What can I do if my BECE result looks wrong?

Start with your school. Reported by Yen.com.gh on 3 August 2026, WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, explained the route for a remark.

1. Tell your school you want a remarking.
2. The school sends the request through the district examinations officer.
3. That officer applies to WAEC for you. Candidates cannot apply directly to the Council.
4. WAEC retrieves the scripts and the chief examiner in each subject reviews them.
5. You, a parent or a guardian can inspect the reviewed scripts.

There is a fee, and we could not find the amount. Mr Kapi said it usually takes a few weeks. He warned that grade changes are rare and that some grades went lower after remarking.

If you think a result is not yours, for example a grade in a subject you did not register for, WAEC said, as reported by MyJoyOnline on 5 August 2026, that it wants documentary evidence. Gather your registration slip, your result and any proof first.

What happens after BECE results: school placement

Placement is a separate step. The CSSPS guideline says it begins after WAEC releases the BECE results. You choose eight schools, and the system places you by merit. For 2026 you can pick at most two Category A schools and three Category B schools, and up to all eight from Category C or Pilot Private schools, five boarding and three day.

For 2026, reported by the press: school selection ran from 20 July to 7 August (a GES announcement, via MyJoyOnline), and placement results came out on 4 September at 10 pm after a postponement from 31 August (Yen.com.gh and the Ghanaian Times). The Deputy Minister was reported to say that 527,932 of 604,567 qualified candidates were placed.

To see your placement, go to cssps.gov.gh with your BECE index number and date of birth. If you were not placed, it offers self-placement. If the index number is not found, the site says to check the number and date of birth, then call 055 037 7388 or 059 952 5926 in working hours. Our guide to CSSPS placement covers the rest, and the official portals page lists the other government sites.

To choose schools, see our SHS categories, search the schools register, or read about the education system in Ghana.

Mistakes and scams to avoid

• Paying anyone to "upgrade" a grade. WAEC calls them fraudsters.
• Typing your index number into a site that is not WAEC. Look for waecgh.org or waecdirect.org.
• Sharing your serial number and PIN, or pressing Submit many times.

What we could not confirm

• The official WAEC price of a BECE results checker voucher.
• Which sellers WAEC has authorised.
• The layout of the result statement.
• The outcome of the 2,722 withheld cases.
• A deadline and fee for requesting a remark.
• The 2027 release date, and dates for earlier years.
