Schools in Ghana for families abroad
Choosing a school in Ghana from overseas comes down to three things: boarding or day, which curriculum, and how admission works. The register holds 43,626 schools, 12,634 of them private, and 217 with a boarding status recorded. It has no curriculum field, so it cannot sort British from American schools. This page says what it can and cannot tell you.
Boarding schools in Ghana
Public senior high schools take boarders and day students, and CSSPS places students after the BECE. The school selection guidelines limit how many boarding schools a candidate may pick from each category, which is explained on the Category A, B and C schools page. Private schools admit directly.
The register records day or boarding for 217 institutions. 148 offer day and boarding. The rest are recorded as day only. The field is filled for a small share of the register, so confirm with the school.
| Type of institution | Recorded with a boarding status |
|---|---|
| Vocational schools | 213 |
| Senior high schools | 4 |
Senior high schools recorded as boarding
| School | Region | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Breman Asikuma Technical Institute | Central | Day and boarding |
| Krobea Asante Technical / Vocational Institute | Ashanti | Day and boarding |
| Cape Coast Technical Institute | Central | Day and boarding |
| Takoradi Technical Institute | Western | Day and boarding |
The register has no boarding filter on the search page yet. Browse senior high schools by region on the senior high schools list.
International, British and American curriculum schools in Ghana
The register holds no curriculum field, so it cannot list British, American or International Baccalaureate schools. What it holds is names. 2,048 schools have International in the name, 2,014 of them private. A name is not proof of curriculum.
| Curriculum | What the child sits | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| Ghanaian | BECE at the end of junior high, WASSCE at the end of senior high | NaCCA sets the curriculum, WAEC sets the exams |
| British | Usually Cambridge IGCSE, then A level | Cambridge, through a registered school |
| American | A US high school diploma, with SAT or AP where the school offers them | The school, against a US accreditor |
| International Baccalaureate | IB Diploma or earlier programmes | The IB, through an authorised school |
To check a school, ask which examination board it is registered with and for its centre number. We hold no school fees, ratings or results, and we do not rank schools.
How admission works from abroad
- Shortlist by region and level on the regions pages, then write to each school’s admissions office.
- Ask how the school places a child who has studied under another curriculum, and whether there is an entry test, online or in person.
- Ask for the fee schedule, the payment method and the term start date in writing.
- For a public senior high school, placement runs through CSSPS after the BECE. The Ghana Education Service says how a child entering mid-stream is handled.
Moving a child back to school in Ghana
Ask the current school for reports and a transfer letter early. Check the Ghana education calendar for term dates, and if your child will sit the BECE or WASSCE, ask the new school how it registers candidates with WAEC. The education system guide shows which stage a child of each age belongs in.
Documents to prepare
- Birth certificate
- Recent school reports or transcripts
- Transfer letter from the current school
- Immunisation record
- Passport photographs and a copy of the child’s passport
Each school publishes its own list, so ask for it in writing.
University from abroad
The universities page lists every institution the regulator names, with accreditation status. Each university’s admissions office says how it treats a foreign qualification. See official portals for GTEC and the universities, and cut-off points.
Questions from families abroad
- What are the top 10 international schools in Ghana?
- We do not publish a top 10 because we hold no school-level results, and a list built on guesses is worse than none. The register holds 2,048 schools with International in the name. A name is not proof of curriculum, so ask each school which examination board it is registered with.
- How does admission work for a child living abroad?
- Public senior high schools take students through CSSPS after the BECE. Private and international schools admit directly and set their own entry tests, fees and start dates. For a child abroad, write to the school's admissions office first and ask how a child entering from another system is placed.
- Are there boarding schools in Ghana for children from abroad?
- Yes. Many public senior high schools take boarders and so do private schools. The register records a boarding status for 217 institutions, most of them vocational, so it is a partial picture. Ask the school directly whether it takes boarders in the year you need.
- What is the difference between a British, an American and a Ghanaian curriculum school?
- A Ghanaian curriculum school follows the NaCCA curriculum and enters pupils for the BECE and WASSCE, which WAEC sets. British curriculum schools usually prepare pupils for Cambridge IGCSE and A level. American curriculum schools award a US high school diploma. Each school states its own curriculum.
- What documents do I need to enrol my child in a Ghanaian school from abroad?
- Each school sets its own list. Expect to be asked for the child's birth certificate, recent school reports or transcripts, passport photographs, an immunisation record and a copy of the child's passport. Ask for the list in writing before you travel.
- How do I move my child back to school in Ghana?
- Request the child's reports and a transfer letter from the current school, choose a school, ask its admissions office how it will place a child coming from another curriculum, and confirm the term start date. Term dates are on the education calendar.
- How do I pay school fees in Ghana from abroad?
- Each school sets its fees and how it takes payment. We hold no fees and no payment details, so ask the school's bursar in writing for the amount, the account and the receipt arrangements before you pay.
- Which university in Ghana is best for international students?
- We publish no university ranking. The universities page lists every institution the regulator names, with accreditation status. Each university's admissions office says how it treats foreign qualifications.
