About Western North Region
Western North Region is one of the six regions created in 2019. It was split from the former Western Region after the referendum of 27 December 2018, in which 99.51 percent voted yes. Sefwi Wiawso is the capital. The region covers about 10,257 square kilometres and had 880,921 residents at the 2021 census, spread over nine districts. Cocoa, timber and mining lead the local economy. Because the region is so new, exam and census results from before 2019 are filed under the old Western Region and cannot be read as Western North figures. Schools here include Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School, where the Asantehene studied, and Bibiani Senior High Technical School, which opened in 1966 with 15 students. Wiawso College of Education trains teachers in the capital. In mid-2025 the region still had no public university, though talks were under way. Bia National Park and Biosphere Reserve protects forest on the border with Cote d'Ivoire.
How the region came about: Created in 2019 from the former Western Region. The referendum on 27 December 2018 returned 99.51 percent yes on a 77.69 percent turnout. Figures from before 2019 for this area sit under the old Western Region.
