About Volta Region

Volta Region sits on Ghana's eastern edge, along the border with Togo, with Ho as its capital. It is smaller than it used to be. In 2019 the northern districts became the Oti Region, so today's Volta has 18 districts and covers 9,504 square kilometres. The 2021 census counted 1,659,040 people in the region as it now stands. Any figure printed before 2019 describes the old, larger region. Ewe is the main language, and the Anlo, Asogli and other Ewe states each keep their own festivals. Hogbetsotso at Anloga in November and the Asogli Yam Festival in September are among the best known. Mawuli School at Ho opened in 1950 and Bishop Herman College at Kpando in 1952. The University of Health and Allied Sciences is in Ho. Visitors come for Wli Falls, the Tafi Atome monkeys and the old fort at Keta, and weavers at Kpetoe and Agbozume still make Ewe kente.

How the region came about: Formed at independence in 1957 from the Trans-Volta Togoland area and the last part of the Crown Colony. In 2019 its northern districts became the Oti Region (Constitutional Instrument 112 of 2019, after a referendum on 27 December 2018). The figures here are for Volta as it stands today.
