What the data show

  1. In 2019/20 Greater Accra held 6 of the top 20 places and Ashanti held 6, so together they held 12. In 2020/21 Greater Accra held 7 and Ashanti 7, together 14.
  2. In 2021/22 Central held 6 of the top 20 places and Upper East 4. Greater Accra fell to 2.
  3. The score is a composite index of education indicators. It is not a pass rate.
  4. Index levels jump between years. The regional scores ran from 14.5 to 32.4 in 2020/21 and from 28.0 to 58.2 in 2021/22. That is why we never compare scores across years, and the three lists have no line joining them.
  5. Where each district ranks is shown on its own district page.
What the data cannot say. We cannot compare a district's score in one year with its score in another. The index levels jump between years, so we compare rank within one year only. We cannot say why Central Region rose in 2021/22. The data show the ranking and do not show causes. We cannot treat the index as a BECE pass rate, or compare it with the 2016/17 BECE pass rates. They are different measures. We cannot say whether any district improved or fell back across the three years, because the series has a break between 2020/21 and 2021/22.

Questions people ask

What is the District League Table?
It is a yearly ranking of districts by UNICEF Ghana and CDD-Ghana. The education score is a composite index of education indicators from the education management information system. It is not a BECE pass rate.
Which district is first in education in Ghana?
It depends on the year. First place in 2019/20 went to Ga West Municipal. In 2020/21 it went to Ga West Municipal, and in 2021/22 to Awutu Senya East Municipal. Rankings are within one year only.
How is the index calculated?
The reports describe it as a composite of education indicators. We hold no weighting detail, and the indicator set and scale differ between editions. Read the report for the method.
Why did Central Region rise in 2021/22?
The data do not say. Central held 6 of the top 20 places that year. Index levels also jumped across the table in 2021/22, so the reshuffle should not be read as a change in quality.
