What the data show
- The pass rate here is the district average of the pass rates in four core subjects for 2016/17. 201 of 261 districts could be matched to our register.
- Upper West, at 48.5 percent, and Upper East, at 54.3 percent, had the two lowest regional averages. Greater Accra averaged 80.0 percent. These regions use the old boundaries.
- Do not read Western as the best region. Its 87.9 percent comes from chart labels in the report. On the Ministry average raw score, Western was in place 2 in 2015, 2 in 2016, 3 in 2017 and 4 in 2018, out of ten regions. Greater Accra scored highest in each of those years, with 340.3 out of 600 in 2018.
- Press reports give BECE pass rates for 28 single districts. We show them separately and labelled. They are not on the same footing as the table, because the pass mark is not stated.
- No source we hold gives a national BECE pass rate, or any district rate after 2016/17.
What the data cannot say. We cannot give a national BECE pass rate. WAEC publishes entries only, and no source we hold gives a national rate. We cannot give any district BECE pass rate after 2016/17, or say whether a district improved or fell back since then. The later District League Table values are an index, which is a different measure. We cannot call Western the best BECE region. Its chart value is read from labels, and the Ministry average raw score ranks it second to fourth. We cannot put the 2016/17 pass rates and the later index values on one axis. They measure different things. Press figures for single districts do not state a pass mark, and in cross-checks they run well below the table values for the same districts.
Questions people ask
- What is the BECE pass rate in Ghana?
- No source we hold gives a national BECE pass rate. WAEC publishes the number of candidates, which was 603,328 in 2025. For 2016/17 we hold district pass rates, and 201 districts are shown on this page.
- Which district has the best BECE results?
- On the 2016/17 District League Table, the highest four-subject average pass rate was 99.0 percent in Nanumba South (Northern). We hold no district rate after 2016/17, so we cannot say who leads today.
- Which region performs best in BECE?
- On the Ministry average raw score, Greater Accra scored highest in each year from 2015 to 2018, with 340.3 out of 600 in 2018. Western appears at the top of one pass rate chart, but its place on the raw score is 2 to 4 out of ten regions, so we do not call it the best.

- How many students wrote BECE in 2025?
