About Tamale

Tamale is the capital of the Northern Region. In the 2021 census the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly area counted 374,744 people, and the neighbouring Sagnarigu Municipal, split off in 2012, counted 341,711. Tamale is the only district in the region where most people, 80.8 percent, live in urban areas. Farming and food processing drive the local economy, and crops from the surrounding districts are traded here. Damba, the yearly celebration of chieftaincy, brings out smocks, drums and musketry.
