About Tema

Tema sits about 30 kilometres east of Accra on the coast. It grew around its harbour, which President Kwame Nkrumah opened in 1962, and the town was laid out to house the port and factory workforce. The Tema Metropolitan Assembly counts more than 500 industries in the metropolis, and says around 350,000 people come in each day for business. The older Ga community of Tema Manhean still marks Homowo each August. Tema Secondary School opened in 1961, and Tema Methodist Day was the first mission senior high school in the metropolis, opening in 1983. When you compare schools here, note that Tema Metropolitan and Tema West are separate assemblies, and the nearby towns of Ashaiman and Kpone are listed apart.
