About Obuasi

Obuasi is a gold-mining town in the Ashanti Region. Mining began here in 1897 under the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, and the municipal assembly describes its aim as to be the Gold City of Ghana. In 2017 the old Obuasi Municipal area was split, so the town now falls under two assemblies, Obuasi Municipal (called Obuasi West in our directory) and Obuasi East. Together they had 196,698 people in the 2021 census. Mining still supports about a third of the workers in the Municipal area, and the assembly wants a wider mix of jobs. Obuasi Senior High Technical School opened in 1965, and KNUST has run a campus in town since 2019. When you look for a school here, search both municipalities.
