About Accra

Accra is the capital of Ghana and sits on the Gulf of Guinea. Old coastal quarters such as Jamestown and Osu still carry the forts built there in the seventeenth century. Makola and Agbogbloshie are the big markets, and about one million people travel into the city each day for work and services, according to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly. Families choosing a school here have a long list to look through. Achimota School opened in 1927 and the University of Ghana began in 1948, and many newer private schools stand beside the older ones. The city is shared between many local assemblies, so use the district filter in the directory to find schools near your home or workplace.

What makes Accra proud

  1. Independence Square was completed in 1961 and hosts the national Independence Day parade every 6 March.
  2. Achimota School, opened in 1927, was the first mixed-gender secondary school in the Gold Coast.
  3. James Fort, Ussher Fort and Christiansborg Castle in Accra are part of Ghana's UNESCO-listed forts and castles.
